What happens after the “altar call?”
Can you imagine anyone bringing a beautiful baby into this world only to hand him or her a bottle and leave the newborn to fend for itself? Of course that sounds crazy, but oftentimes that is exactly what happens to many newborn baby Christians.
It’s wonderful to lead people to the Lord, to pray the salvation prayer with them, or to help someone respond to an altar call. It is truly thrilling to see people accept Jesus as their Lord. But what happens after the “altar call”? Do we hand a baby Christian a Bible and leave them to fend for themselves?
Unfortunately, we have observed that too many Christians – new, young, and old alike – have not had the privilege of being personally guided and grounded in the Word of God by someone more experienced. The result has been Christians who are not established in the basics of their faith – what they believe and why they believe it. Their Christian life becomes one emotional roller-coaster experience after another. For these reasons, we offer the GPS class – God’s Positioning Strategy – on a regular basis.
What is the GPS Class?
This is Living Word Ministries’ foundations class where we study such things as:
- How to Become a Christian
- How to Be Sure You Are a Christian
- How to Develop Your Relationship with God
- How to Talk to God
- How to Hear from God
- How to Obey God
- How to Experience God’s Love and Forgiveness
- How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit
- How to Be Sure You Are Filled with the Holy Spirit
- How to Grow and Develop Your Faith
- How to Experience the Abundant Life
- How to Live the Victorious Christian Life
- How to Serve God
When is the class offered?
The GPS class is offered 3-4 times per year. Each class runs for 12 weeks, meeting for 1 1/2 hours on Sunday mornings and/or Wednesday nights. See when the next GPS Class begins.
Who should take GPS?
We encourage EVERYONE to take this class:
- If you are a brand new Christian, or if you have questions about the Bible, you should take this class. The class time, homework and interaction with other Christians will help establish you in your faith and will help answer questions you may have.
- If you’ve never had a chance to be grounded in the fundamental truths of your faith, or if you’ve never had the opportunity to be personally guided in the basics of God’s Word, then this class is for you.
- If you are an older Christian, perhaps born-again and walking with God for many years, you should take this class as well. We have found that we can never be too old to get a refresher in the basics of our faith. In fact, associating with new Christians brings a fresh appreciation of God’s Word in the heart of even the oldest believers!
Why should I take the GPS Class?
We have seen people who take this class gain a greater understanding of God’s Word, and experience a renewed joy in their salvation! Those who have a strong, biblical foundation tend to be more consistent, stable, balanced, and fruitful in their overall Christian life. Believers who are established in what they believe and why they believe it are not easily tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine. They are not pulled off course by an overemphasis on “pet” doctrines. As Christians are established in the basics of God’s Word, their “roller-coaster” experience seems to stabilize. In addition, when the challenges of life come, those who have a solid foundation in God’s Word seem to weather the storms better, and in the end, they come out victorious!
- GPS is a prerequisite for most areas of volunteer service.
